***Update***

What a great event Wednesday night!  Well-attended, well-auctioned, and lots of good conversation and energy.  The Favela Cubana food was great, the Georgetown cupcakes superlative, and the "Found" bar didn't run out, made special by skillful celebrity bartending by Kathleen!

Thanks to all who made it happen, and all who attended, learning about the status of Build.Found projects in Haiti.

Particular thanks are due to Amy for bringing the event to animate our new Breakthrough Space at the Center for Architecture, and for the "Build" construction workers who made the entrance accessible.

Rick Bell
Executive Director, AIA New York

CONSTRUCTION REPORT

March 2012

Repatriote & Cite Soliel

Even though our involvement in the Cite Soliel health clinic was minimal, we offered structural design assistance for the core structure of the project. The clinic will open March 2012 (this month) and it will be run by Samaritan’s Purse.

Repatriote school is open, phase 1. The second phase of the project (building 2) will commence in 2013. By the time the school is complete, it will have a capacity for 600 students.

The school is effectively almost complete. The plan is to open for students and teachers on Jan 3, 2012. We finished forming and pouring the roof of the school. A total of 62 cm. (81 cy for us in US) was poured in 8 hours using 120 Haitian workers and two 3/4 cy concrete mixers, mix proportion control and slump tests.

We've finished the exterior walls of the first floor and are pouring a topping slab this week. We should start the interior gypboard walls next week, then finish with building the cabinets, installing the electrical and painting.

Structurally, we are to pour the stairs to the second floor this week, (Pray for equal stair treads and risers. This is one difficult activity for the Haitian builders. Stripping of forms is going on this week and basic clean up is proceeding, followed by stairs to the roof and the roof dog house.

September 2011
We have received an update on the Repatriote School construction. We hope that this gives you a sense of how our BuildFound support is progressing. As we work into the Fall, we are beginning to refocus on fundraising for a second site assessment trip and other associated costs for BuildFound. We rely on your donations to be able to sponsor the site assessments of our design team . Our design team works completely as volunteers, in addition to their personal jobs. Please Donate to help us begin building toward our next trip to be scheduled when Haiti Outreach Ministries construction team needs the assessment trip.

Progress of Design and Construction on the School at Repatriote, Haiti
From Bob O’Brien, Haiti Outreach Ministries Volunteer Construction Manager

We're laying out the stairs for the school extending the stairs from the second floor to the roof.
We'll complete pouring the shear walls and columns this week (week ending 9/16).  Then Bill Fudge, a volunteer project manager  who oversaw the second floor slab, will come down to oversee the roof slab pour.
We're starting the architectural finishes on the first floor.  The exterior walls will be 6" cmu block with metal windows 4' x 10' on the east, west and south sides. These are windows that were salvaged from the church when it was demolished.  New 3' metal doors will be set on the east side in each room adjacent to the window.
We're planning the interior wall partitions to be gypboard on metal studs (we found gypboard down here along with a person who can install it) and the long cabinets.
We've set pvc sleeves in the center of the concrete beams to facilitate surface installation of lights and outlets. The electrical load for this building is very straight forward. Here is the electrical detail, for those of you who may be interested.

1.  Each room will have 4-4' long x 2' two bulb fluorescent fixtures, using the 36 kw bulbs with electronic ballasts. The middle rooms may have 6 fixtures with their orientation. The lighting usage will be from 7 am to 2:30 pm each day, 5 days/week, then 5 pm to 8 pm each evening, 6 days per week for church usage. Each room will also have 2 ceiling fans.
2. Each room will have 4 duplex outlets, two on each of the north/south walls in each room.  These outlets will only have 1 elmo projector or overhead projector in use for 2-3 hours per day. Almost every outlet will have a cell phone charger plugged in.
3.  Only the office, (south room, 2nd floor) will have 4 desk lights, 60 wt. each,  2 laptop computers and 1 desktop printer in use in addition to the normal classroom load.  This office will be used 5 days a week and locked on the weekend.
It appears we would only need a 100 amp service distribution panel for this building.  We are planning solar panel installation.  On a temporary basis, I would envision a small generator to be set in the back of the existing classroom building.  We're using that building for construction material storage.
We will need to look into a submersible pump on the existing well at the compound to provide water to the building for kids to wash hands and drink. We were thinking of mounting a 300 gal. tank on the roof to accomplish this.
We are planning on cleaning and using the existing latrines for this first building.  Ultimately we will have permanent toilet facilities.
I hope that I haven’t gotten too detailed, however, this gives everyone, engineers and others, a sense of what we are accomplishing. We want to thank the design team as they continue to support our construction and our continuing questions.

Background
________________________________

Building Foundations began the work of rebuilding earthquake devastated Haiti in February, 2010. Inspired by design & construction professionals eager to volunteer their expertise towards the cause, Build.Found was created to take a hands-on approach to strengthening the country’s fragile infrastructure.
Only 10 months following the earthquake, thousands of hours have been volunteered by New York-City based architects, engineers, landscape architects, construction and other experts to provide sustainable designs for single family homes, schools, medical clinics, agricultural gardens and a church in the Repatriate Community located outside Port-au-Prince.
Along with the expanding scope of this pilot project, is Building Foundation’s deepened commitment to the sustainable community and professional development of local residents and American volunteers.
